Celebrating Earth Day at Missouri's First Green Winery

Why Jowler Creek Became a Certified Sustainable Winery and Vineyard

Being “green” can mean so many things… For Jowler Creek Vineyard and Winery near Kansas City, Missouri and Weston, Missouri i, being green means making choices throughout the year - and not just on Earth Day - to positively impact our environment, being efficient with the resources we have available, and improving our wine quality to sustain our business. Since our family’s home is in the middle of the vineyard and just yards away from the winery, we try and do everything we can to care for our land, our people, and our animals to sustain the business for generations to come. Earth Day is a day for all of us to celebrate how a lot of little things can add up to making a better planet, one glass at a time.

Our path to becoming Missouri’s First Green Winery began a decade ago when we began searching for a system to control weeds while simultaneously reducing erosion. This led to the idea of grazing sheep under the grape vines. Though skeptical at first, Jowler Creek owner Jason Gerke agreed to try the idea and has since fully embraced the goal of increasing production while reducing the carbon footprint of the vineyard and winery.

Jowler Creek Leads the Midwest in Sustainable Wine Production

Being green, is not only re-discovering traditional production methods such as rotational grazing, it also means embracing technologies that have a positive impact on the environment. Since then, we've incorporated a long list of green practices in both in the vineyard and in the winery into our everyday business practices. Practices such as running errands in our zero-emission, 100% electric Nissan Leaf car, adding an electric vehicle and Tesla charging station, and adding bees and beehives to the vineyard to improve the cover crops between the rows and surrounding ecosystems that help vines via increased biodiversity and improved soil health.

You might see our Leaf adorned with giant bottles of wine driving around Kansas City. The technology, style and comfort are amazing while the carbon footprint of each electric mile is significantly lower than internal combustion automobiles. The new EV charging stations also make Jowler Creek Winery one of the most convenient stops for electric vehicles in Northern Platte County for those traveling on I-29. While at the winery, EV drivers can recharge their batteries and enjoy Jowler Creek Winery’s self guided walking tour while they wait.

Jowler Creek is the First Winery in Missouri to be Certified Sustainable in all Five Categories

In early 2017, our hard-work on sustainability was recognized as we became the first winery in the state to be certified through the Missouri Agricultural Stewardship Assurance Program (ASAP) across all five available categories - energy, farmstead, grassland, livestock and specialty crops.

Because so many of you were visiting the winery and wanting to see our sustainable practices for yourself (especially the cute vineyard sheep!), we developed a self-guided eco-tour walking trail around our property featuring 16 educational tour stops. By picking up a tour map/guide in the tasting room and exploring the property, you can learn how composting, solar power generation, water conservation and managed livestock grazing contribute to a “greener” glass of wine.
